Games for Learning
On-Course Games
Under the official Rules of Golf there are three central elements of all golf competitions:
- Playing either Matchplay or Strokeplay,
- Playing either as an individual or with a partner as part of a side, and
- Scoring either by gross scores (no handicap strokes applied) or net scores (handicap strokes applied).
In Matchplay, a player and an opponent compete against each other based on holes won, lost or tied.
In the regular form of Strokeplay, all players compete with one another based on their total score for the round.
The Rules of Golf recognize other forms of Strokeplay that use slightly different scoring methods – games such as “Stableford”, “Maximum Score” and “Bogey.”

Golf Glossary
“Golfspeak” can be a bit confusing at the best of times, especially because it’s not necessarily universal, but it is part and parcel of the game nonetheless.
Here is a list I have compiled, from various sources including my own experience, of some of the more common terms you might encounter, including plenty of golf slang for your amusement.
For clarity, under the Full Glossary tab, I have included whether the term is a Rule of Golf or a Local Rule (Rule), a general term (General), a definition of something on the course or to do with equipment or your swing (Definition), golfing slang (Slang), or a type of game (Format).
The list is extensive so I’ve put it on a separate page – you’ll find it HERE.
